2018 Bat Rule Changes

Announcement – USA Stamped Bats for 9U-14U for 2018 Season

It was officially announced last week that the Metro Baseball League (MBL) and Metro Baseball State Tournament (MBT) will be adopting the new USABat Standard for the 2018 season for the 9-14U ages.  This change will NOT affect the 15U age.

Since the new USABat Standard will affect existing bats and may affect your bat purchase decisions, FTBA is providing this information to better understand the new rule change, including what changes to expect, why a change is being made, and who this new standard will affect.

What is the New USABat Standard

The new USABat Standard is intended to make bats perform like wood bats.  According to USA Baseball, the governing body that oversaw the research and ratification of the new USABat Standard, this change is being made for “integrity of the game”, and not “safety” reasons, as it claims “Youth baseball continues to be one of the safest of all sports”.

Bats meeting the new USABat Standard will be marked with the following USA Baseball Stamp:

The new USABat Standard change was made by USA Baseball, and adopted by MBL/MBT, which is NOT something that FTBA had any input or control over.

MBT/MBL Bat Rules for 2018:

The new USABat Standard means that MBL/MBT will only be allowing bats with the new USA Baseball Stamp for 9-14U.  This change will NOT affect 15U, who will be able to use bats having the new USA Baseball Stamp and also bats with the BBCOR stamp bat that the 15’s and up have used the past few years.  MBL/MBT bat rules for 2018 are as follows:

  • 9-13U Bats must be 2 1/4" unlimited weight differential or bats must be between 2 1/2" and 2 3/4"and have a –10 differential or less (i.e. 30” – 20.0 oz.) (USA Baseball Stamp bats only).

  • 14-U 14/15A Bats must be 2 3/4" or smaller with a -5 Differential or less. (USA Baseball Stamp bats only).

  • 15-U Bats must be 2 5/8”or smaller with a –3 or less. (USA Baseball Stamp bats or the BBCOR stamped bat).

  • 14/15A can use either -3 or -5 bats. (-3 bats can be USA Baseball Stamp bats or the BBCOR stamped bat, -5 bat must be a USA Baseball Stamp bat).

What this means for Existing Bats

  1. Bats used during the 2017 season for 9-13U players, which are marked with a 1.15BPF stamp and do NOT contain the new USA Baseball Stamp, will be illegal in MBL/MBT games for the 2018 season.

  2. Since existing bats will be illegal in MBL/MBT games, new bats will need to be purchased having the USA Baseball Stamp for the 2018 season.

  3. Bats marked with the new USA Baseball Stamp will NOT be available for purchase until September 1, 2017.

  4. Since FTBA teams play in MBL/MBT games, FTBA advises NOT to buy bats at stores or online that do NOT have the USA Baseball Stamp shown above.

  5. USSSA youth baseball will NOT be implementing this rule change.  The Gopher State Tournament follows USSSA youth baseball rules.  FTBA is undertaking an analysis of the ramifications of MBL/MBT adopting the USA Baseball rule change in view of GSTC not adopting the rule change.  As such, FTBA does not advise disposing of your existing bats having the old standard at this time.
